Absences

In the event of your child being absent either

(a) send a note with the child on the day he/she returns to school or;

(b) contact the school by phone.

This is for your protection. The regulations state that the only conditions under which a child may be absent from school are when the child is under expert tuition (e.g. music, art of speech, dancing), a visit to the doctor or dentist or when the child is ill.

Please extend this courtesy to other scheduled school activities such as swimming instruction in the summer months.

Ambulance

ambulance Parent/Guardians will be contacted if an ambulance is called for your child. If we are unable to contact you in an emergency, a staff member will accompany your child in the ambulance.

Arts Council Performances

Cultural activities include performances by Queensland Arts Council groups. The school endeavours to ensure children attend at least two Arts Council performances per year. Admission price is a parent responsibility. This is currently $5.00 per person.

Assembly

A weekly assembly is held every Friday from 9:00 a.m. All interested people are welcome to attend. During assembly sessions, good work is recognised, the Students of the Week are presented and occasionally classes perform items.

Please feel most welcome in attending assemblies, as they aren’t designed to be a “school only” event.

Behaviour Code

All members of the school community are expected to show courtesy and consideration for one another, and to take responsibility for their actions. It is our aim that everyone speaks and acts in such a way that mutual respect is the tone of school operations and interactions. Thus the Code of Behaviour would be followed, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

The school community focuses on recognition of positive attributes and achievements.

Children are expected to behave themselves at all times on the way to and from school and at school. The school’s Behaviour Management Plan provides “non-contact time” for students who break the school rules. Parents are always notified when students are placed in “non-contact”.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY BEHAVIOUR CODE

At Albert State School, we value the following baseline behaviours for all members of the school community.

A Good Name - Am I giving myself, my classmates and my school a good name? friends

Learning - Am I allowing others to learn and be happy?

Be Safe - Am I keeping myself and others safe?

Empathy - Am I able to settle disagreements through discussion and problem solving?

Responsibility - Am I helping myself to learn?

Tidiness - Am I keeping my school and surroundings clean and tidy?

From this Behaviour Code, we have identified four levels at which we all operate – Beginner, Developing, Competent, Excelling. These are catalogued in a table that we call the Behaviour Matrix.

This resource can be used to assist students self-identify their level of operation, then works towards honing their skills in that particular area. It can also be used to frame conversations between staff members, between staff members and parent/caregivers etc. The behaviours of students can also be quantified, allowing for the school to conduct an audit on student behaviour.

It is impossible for us to reproduce all elements of our School Community Behaviour Code in these pages. If you’d like more information, please contact the office.

Early Departures

If a student need to go home due to illness or any other reason, they are required to be signed out at the office by a parent/guardian or an adult nominated by the parent/guardians.

Enrolment

For further information on enrolment click here.

Examinations/Testing & Reporting to parents

examTesting will be conducted throughout the year.  All teachers use a variety of methods to collect information on the progress of your child/ren.  A written report will be issued each semester.  Formal interviews are sometimes conducted in conjunction with the report card.  As we don’t organize mandatory interviews these are requested by the teachers or by the students’ parents or carers. However, please feel free to discuss your child’s progress with his/her teacher at any time.  It is essential for the educational well-being of your child for you to keep in close contact with the school.  Our school is a very busy place so appointments where possible will allow us to better cater to your requests.

Excursions

Excursions extend children’s learning by offering experiences not available at school, so they are a part of the class program. Parental consent and payment of costs are required, but excursions should not be considered optional. Trips within walking distance of the school are included in class routine. Specific conditions apply to each excursion, e.g. practical footwear and hat. You will be advised in writing giving details of an excursion involving your child.

Family Records

On enrolment of your child, you will be asked to fill in your family details for our school records. These become very important when there is an accident at school and we need to get professional medical attention for your child. Please fill in all the details.

Change of Personal Details

Please notify the school, in writing, of any changes to details provided at time of enrolment — address, contact phone numbers, marital status, custody arrangements, occupation, doctor etc. This information is confidential and accuracy is required, particularly in an emergency.

fruitFruit or Vegetable Break

There is a vast wealth of research supporting good nutrition not just for general health and well-being, but also for brain function and learning. As a result our school has adopted the "Fruit & Vege Break" program, which is operating successfully in many other schools. We ask students to bring to school a piece of fruit or vegetable. Classes break from work about 10.00am to eat their fruit or vegetables.

Hats

Hats are to be worn by all children during play. The “No Hat No Play” rule applies. A broad brimmed hat is a must. The convincing evidence on skin cancer places an obligation on parents to model and encourage hat wearing by their children. Parents are urged to follow the school’s Sunsafe Policy.

Head Lice

All parents have an obligation to check children’s hair regularly for lice and/or eggs, treating as necessary. Regular checks and follow-up treatment are necessary.

Our school policy on head lice is that if a member of staff notices lice or eggs on the head of a child, a note is sent home with all students in that class alerting families to the presence of head lice.  If the child comes to school the next day with head lice the parent/guardian of that child is contacted, so the child can be collected and the lice treated.  Please note that the child is also to remain home the following day.

Homework

homeworkHomework is designed to create a practice situation for work previously taught. It plays an important part in the teaching and learning process. Regular homework will be administered for children to complete. As a link between home and school, homework should be used by parents as an opportunity to share in the child’s developing skills. In most classes, homework is set regularly. The time required for homework varies and is at the teacher’s discretion. However, homework should not be a burden to child or parent. If this happens, it is important to discuss the matter with the class teacher. Long-term assignments and projects should be worked on regularly to allow completion by the set date.

Illness at School

From time to time, children become ill at school. On a short term basis, they are cared for in our Health Room. If, in the opinion of the supervising teacher, the child will not recover quickly, parents will be contacted and asked to collect the child.

Please fill in the “Sign Out Register” at the office.
